Alkalosis

Symptoms

Fins frayed or ragged
Fins look as if they are rotting away, giving eroded appearance.
Grey/white spot around head.
Around the head area is a large grey or white spot.
Subepithelial petechiae
Small bloody red dots or effusions, evident below skin.
Loss of balance
Fish keeps falling from its attempted swimming pattern.
Gills brown/red
Gills have a dark brown or dark red colouration.
Skin excessive sliminess
Skin shows mucous and slime far in excess of normal.
pH too High

Causes

Excessivly high pH, which may be accompanied by very high Hardness values. Test water with pH and GH & KH test kits to verify condition.

Prognosis

In tanks partial water changes can improve conditions dramatically. In ponds and enclosed bodies of water, liming can be used to lower pH and increase buffer capacity.
