Symptoms

Blindness
A typical symptom of Crytobia is blindness, most noticeably fish swimming into objects.
Laying on side
Fish lies on side, usually motionless.
Eyes sunken
Eyes appear sunken into the head of the fish.
Loss of balance
Fish keeps falling from its attempted swimming pattern.
Respiration slow
Fish's breathing is obviously slower than normal.
Faded colours
Colours of fish look washed out compared to normal.
Gills pale
Instead of a normal bright red colour the gills are very pale in colour.
Listless and lethargic
Fish moves very lazily in water, much less than normal, lacks interest.

Causes

A biflagellate parasite. Species of Trypanosomidae, found in the blood of the fish. Similar species causes "sleeping sickness" in man.

Prognosis

Almost always fatal.
