Exhaustion (Inanition)

Symptoms

Disproportionate head
Head has grown much larger in proportion to body than normal.
Growth poor
Parasite infested fish show very slow or no growth, as parasite is taking the food.
Fins frayed or ragged
Fins look as if they are rotting away, giving eroded appearance.
Reluctant to feed
Fish comes to eat but with evident lack of appetite.
Abdomen sunken
The lower part of the fish's body is hollow and wasted.
Muscular atrophy
Muscles of fish show evident wasting away.
Eating normally
Fish can suffer from inanition even when apparently eating normally, especially when diet is unbalanced.
Listless and lethargic
Fish moves very lazily in water, much less than normal, lacks interest.

Causes

Lack of food, or adequate diet.

Prognosis

Excellent if feeding is resumed with a balanced diet.
