Neon disease (Plistophoriasis)

Symptoms

White growths on colors - Neons
The coloured line of Neons and other Characins show a white "wooly" growth eating the colour away.
Skin turbidity
Skin shows an over all turbidity or haze.
Muscular atrophy
Muscles of fish show evident wasting away.
Abdomen sunken
The lower part of the fish's body is hollow and wasted.
Loss of balance
Fish keeps falling from its attempted swimming pattern.
Listless and lethargic
Fish moves very lazily in water, much less than normal, lacks interest.
Vertical swimming head up
Fish swims in an almost vertical position with its head upwards.

Causes

Microasite, viz. Plistophora hyphessobryconissporidian par. Typically infects "Neons" and other closely related characins, but has now spread to several other species. Also infects salmonids.

Prognosis

Very contagious, usually fatal. No treatment except complete sterilization.
