Prymnesium parvum (<i>Prymnesium parvum</i>)

Symptoms

Prymnesium parva algae
Fish jump out of water
Fish periodically leap above water surface trying to get air.
Dissolved oxygen low < 6mg\L
Most aquatic fish in freshwater or seawater require oxygen levels above 6mg/L. Check oxygen level.
Listless and lethargic
Fish moves very lazily in water, much less than normal, lacks interest.

Causes

Toxins produced by algal blooms. Toxin is lethal at 5 ITU = Ichthyotoxic Unit/ml. At 25 units the entire stock can die within 1 day.

Prognosis

Outlook is very poor, unless rapid corrective action is taken.
