Velvet or rust disease (<i>Oodinium limneticum</i>)

Small dust-like gold-grey spots
The body is covered with a very fine dust-like spots of a gold-grey colour.
Flagellates on skin
Respiration rapid
Fish is breathing very fast, much faster than is normal.
Fish constantly rubs or scratches itself against any object available.
Fins folded
The fins of the fish remain in a closed position due to discomfort.

This is freshwater disease only, not the same as the Marine Oodinium. Cause is a parasitic dinoflagellate, viz. O.pillularis and O.Limneticum.

Not immediately fatal, normally takes a few days before casualties will occur in large numbers. However its reproductive rate is very high and it can rapidly spread.

Reasonable, if caught in time, & environmental conditions are first rate.
